Men's Golf Visits Purdue in Tune-Up for MAC Championships
April 18, 2025 | Men's Golf
MUNCIE, Ind. -- In a final tune-up before defending their Mid-American Conference championship next week at Pinnacle Golf Club in Grove City, Ohio, the Ball State Cardinals battle this Saturday and Sunday, April 19 and 20, in the Boilermaker Invitational hosted at Purdue University's Ackerman-Allen Golf Course.
Ironically, the Cardinals will navigate the par-71, 7,275-yard Ackerman-Allen track with a veteran lineup that hasn't played together since they finished 10th out of 15 teams at the Purdue Fall Invite last September. That event, played on the Kampen-Cosler course that will host a simultaneous individual tournament this weekend, took place before sophomore transfer Avery Mahoney nursed an ailing back last fall, and before senior Kash Bellar missed a pair of events due to injury this spring.
Mahoney, though, has competed in each event this spring, and Bellar finished sixth out of 100 competitors as an individual in Butler's Don Benbow Invitational two weeks ago. Both will be in this week's lineup along with seniors Ali Khan and Braxton Kuntz, and junior Carter Smith. Drew Todd and freshmen Happy Gilmore and Gavin Hare will participate in the individual event this weekend.
Khan, who has been the Cardinals' hottest golfer this spring, including a MAC Golfer of the Week honor on Feb. 28 following a top-10 finish at the Dorado Beach Collegiate in Puerto Rico, enters this week's event in the No. 1 position for Ball State. Mahoney follows at No. 2, with Smith, Bellar and Kuntz rounding out the Cardinals' lineup card. Khan paced Ball State in the Purdue Fall Invite last September, also, followed by Bellar and Kuntz, tied just two strokes behind him.
Barring inclement weather, two rounds of 18 holes are scheduled for Saturday, with a final round slated for Sunday.
