
Ball State Men's Volleyball Falls to UH in Opening Match of Outrigger Invitational

HONOLULU, Hawaii – The No. 12 Ball State Cardinals fell 0-3 (19-25, 13-25, 27-29) to the No. 3 Hawai'i Rainbow Warriors in match one of the Outrigger Invitational Friday night.
Opening tournament play for the traveling Cardinals (13-7; 6-3 MIVA) team, a kill from Patrick Rogers got things started against the Rainbow Warriors (18-1; 2-0 BW) in SimpliFi Arena. The Rainbow Warriors took the next three and established the pace of the match. Ball State stayed close through most of set one, but Hawai'i maintained strong in their lead through the end. The home team took the opening frame 25-19.
Ball State fell behind 0-6 to start the second set and the team was never able to find a rally and battle back. Hawai'i controlled the frame, winning the next point 25-13.
Despite not finding a rhythm in set two, the Cardinals came into the third frame battling. With the addition of Ryan Louis and Wil Basilio to open the set, Ball State took its first extended lead of the night at 10-6. Hawai'i came back to tie it at 13-13, then added two more to regain the advantage. The Cardinals stayed within striking distance at a 20-20 tied frame. A kill from Basilio put Ball State back on top, forcing Hawai'i to call a timeout. The Cardinals followed up with back-to-back blocks from Basilio, Braydon Savitski-Lynde and Louis, putting Ball State up 23-20 and forcing the Rainbow Warriors to take another timeout. Still in control, a kill from Savitski-Lynde following the timeout put the Cardinals at 24-21 set point. With the response, the Rainbow Warriors took three in a row, tying the set at 25-25. The match went into extra points and in the end, Hawai'i was able to hold off the Cardinals' final attempts to win on a 29-27 final point.
Rogers led Ball State's offense with 11 kills at a .292 clip. Savitski-Lynde followed, adding five kills and hitting at .556, the highest hitting percentage of the match from both teams.
Defensively, Vanis Buckholz and Basilio led the team, each recording three blocks. Basilio also added three digs against the Hawai'i offense.
As a team Ball State hit at a .182 (77-30-16) percentage, compared to that of .405 (84-46-12) from the Rainbow Warriors.
The Cardinals will now shift their focus to tomorrow where they will take on No. 5 University of Southern California. First serve is scheduled for 4 p.m. HT and will not be live streamed. Following the Ball State, USC matchup, Hawai'i will host No. 19 Penn State at 7 p.m. HT to be streamed on ESPN+.
