Women’s Golf Captures Lady Jaguar Invitational Title
April 14, 2024 | Women's Golf
CARMEL, Ind. - - The Ball State women's golf team closed its 2023-24 regular season in style Sunday afternoon, earning a one-stroke win over both Butler and league rival Ohio to take the championship trophy at the 2024 Lady Jaguar Invitational hosted by IUPUI.
"I am very proud of the way we battled coming down the stretch today," head coach Cameron Andry exclaimed. "It wasn't always pretty, and we certainly made our fair share of errors, but we never let go of the rope."
The Cardinals finished the 36-hole event at the Plum Creek Golf Club in Carmel, Indiana, with a score of +30 (606). After the Bulldogs and Bobcats, the host Jaguars took fourth among the 11-team field at +40 (616).
While junior Sabrina Langerak turned in another solid round and finished as the tournament runner-up at +3 (147), it was a clutch late birdie from sophomore Sarah Gallagher on the 17th that helped lock up the team win for the Cardinals.
With just a few groups remaining on the course and Ball State and Butler deadlocked for the top team spot, Gallagher carded her second birdie of the back nine on the par-5, 489-yard 17th to give the BSU the one-stroke edge.
"Sarah really battled after faltering in the middle of the round," Andry said. "The way she finished lifted us to the title."
The birdie, followed by a par on 18, capped a round of +6 (78) which allowed Gallagher to climb 10 spots on the final leaderboard into a tie for 26th. She was Ball State's biggest mover in the final round and tied her opening-round score for a tournament total of +12 (156).
Back to the top of the leaderboard, Langerak was able to battle back from a double bogey on her opening hole and shoot +2 the rest of the round, including a birdie of her own on the par-4, 365-yard 13th.
"Sabrina got off to a shaky start today, but she settled in, stuck to her process, and battled until the last putt dropped," Andry said. "She's got a great competitive spirit and it's fun to watch her compete!"
On a day when red numbers were tough to find, Langerak would also play 13 holes at par Sunday, while tying for the overall tournament lead with seven total birdies over the two days.
The Cardinals' Sunday team effort also counted rounds of +6 (78) by both senior Kiah Parrott and sophomore Jasmine Driscoll. Following her opening-round +2 (74), Parrott would tie for 9th overall at +8 (152). Driscoll tied for 21 overall, at +11 (155), along with sophomore teammate Madelin Boyd.
Overall, Ball State's top five led the field with 23 total birdies and paced all 11 teams with an average par 3 score of 3.23 (+9). The next closest squad on the par 3s was Butler at 3.35 (+14). Ball State was also second on the team par 5 leaderboard at 5.03 (+1) and third on par 4s at 4.35 (+35).
On the individual side, freshman Madelyn Young tied for third among the field's 22 individual golfers at +13 (157). The effort also tied for 28th among the 77-player field.
Up next for the Ball State women's golf team is the 2024 Mid-American Conference Championships hosted by Ohio at the Pinnacle Golf Club in Grove City, Ohio.
After a practice round Saturday, the three-day tournament kicks off Sunday (April 21) and runs through Tuesday (April 23).
