November 01, 2024 | Field Hockey
LOUISVILLE - - Graduate midfielder Emma Hilton picked the right time to score her second goal of the 2024 season Friday, slipping a shot into the back of the cage early in the third period to provide the game-winner in a 2-1 victory over Bellarmine in the team's regular season finale.
With the win, the Cardinals (5-12; 4-4 Mid-American Conference) secured the fifth seed in next week's MAC Championship and will square off against fourth-seeded Kent State in Wednesday's (Nov. 6) 11:30 a.m. quarterfinal match at the Miami Field Hockey Complex in Oxford, Ohio.
In Friday's victory over the Knights (4-13; 1-7 MAC), Ball State was able to jump on the scoreboard early with a sixth-minute goal from junior midfielder Emma van Hal. The goal, van Hal's team-leading ninth of the season, was setup by a pass from senior forward Jenna Wyckoff.
While Bellarmine was able to tie the score late in the opening half courtesy of Annie Malloy's second tally of the season, Hilton set the tone early in the second half with her marker.
The Cardinals rode the energy into the defensive front as well, allowing no shots in the third period and denying all six shots and holding off four corners in the fourth.
Senior Hannah Johnston picked up the win for the Cardinals in the cage by making a pair of saves.
