September 29, 2023 | Field Hockey
MUNCIE, Ind. - The Ball State field hockey team is set to host Kent State in a Mid-American Conference showdown Saturday at the Briner Sports Complex. The game is slated to begin at noon.
The Cardinals (5-4, 2-0 MAC) look to extend their win streak to six and remain undefeated in conference against the Golden Flashes (2-7, 1-1 MAC).
Ball State is off to one of its best starts in over a decade after winning five in the row for the first time since 2006.
Last week, the Cardinals earned two shutout victories against Central Michigan and Lindenwood. Fleur Knopert had a strong performance last weekend with six scored goals which was highlighted with two hat tricks, earning back-to-back MAC Offensive Player of the Week honors. She was also recognized on a national level after being named the National Field Hockey Coaches Association DI Offensive Player of the Week Honorable Mention.
The last time Ball State defeated Kent State was Oct. 22, 2011, in Muncie by a score of 4-3. Since 2009 the Golden Flashes hold a 18-1 record against the Cardinals. Kent State won its last meeting over Ball State by a score of 7-0, Sept. 23, 2022.
Ball State head coach Caitlin Walsh is no stranger when it comes to Kent State. Walsh served as the assistant coach for the Golden Flashes for three seasons (2019, 2020 & 2021) helping Kent State amass a 34-18 record, including 20-5 in league play. The Golden Flashes were regular season conference champions in 2019 and 2021.
After this weekend, the Ball State field hockey team will head on the road for two games against Davidson (Oct. 6) and Longwood (Oct. 8).
