Field Hockey Drops Close MAC Matchup to Kent State Saturday
September 30, 2023 | Field Hockey
MUNCIE, Ind. - It was a hard-fought battle between the Cardinals and the Golden Flashes from start to finish but unfortunately for Ball State the win column would go to Kent State. The Golden Flashes earned a 4-2 victory at the Briner Sports Complex Saturday afternoon in Mid-American Conference action.Â
Â
Despite their best effort, the Cardinals (5-5, 2-1 MAC) struggled in the final quarter which saw the Golden Flashes (3-7, 2-1 MAC) score two goals. Ball State never recovered from Kent State's late scoring spree.Â
Â
Ball State played a strong first half which saw Kerrianne McClay score the first goal of the contest at the 11:42 mark of the first quarter of play. McClay was able to capitalize off a corner after the assist from Fleur Knopert and Libby Kraus. The goal was McClay's second of the season and 11th for her career. The Cardinal's defense was unstoppable in the first 15 minutes of the contest as Ball State held Kent State scoreless.
Â
After that, Kent State ramped up its offense as the Golden Flashes Eva Usoz found the back of the cage with just a little over two minutes shaved off the clock in the second period to knot the game, 1-1. Both teams continued to play neck-and-neck and would end the first half tied.Â
Â
Emma Hilton answered for the Cardinals after intermission to give Ball State the 2-1 advantage over Kent State. Hilton's goal at the 42-minute mark was assisted by McClay. It marked goal No. 1 of the season for Hilton.Â
Â
The remainder of the game got dicey for the Cardinals. The Golden Flashes controlled the tempo the remainder of the contest after tying the contest back up 2-2 in the third.Â
Â
Kent State went on to find the back of the cage two more times in the final stanza while the Cardinals struggled to connect offensively the remainder of the contest.Â
Â
The Ball State field hockey team heads back on the road next weekend as the Cardinals play Davidson in non-conference action Friday at 6 pm ET.
