Ball State Falls in Tough One Against Kent State

KENT, Ohio – The Ball State baseball team returned to Olga Mural Field at Schoonover Stadium for the final game against Kent State on Monday. The Cardinals lost on a walk-off hit, 5-4. BSU saw its 11-game winning streak snapped.
With the loss, the Cardinals fell to 32-15 overall and 26-5 in Mid-American Conference games, while the Gold Flashes improved to 18-26 overall and 13-17 in the conference.
Hunter Dobbins led Ball State with a 3-for-4 day at the plate and scored a run. Ryan Peltier added two hits, both doubles, and scored once.
Amir Wright has now reached safely in 46 of the 47 games this season and has reached safely in 20 straight. Trenton Quartermaine has reached safely in 23-consecutive games. Dobbins extended his hitting streak to seven games and has reached safely in nine straight. Zach Cole and Nick Powell have reached safely in 10-consecutive contests. Cole produced his NCAA leading eighth triple and now has two more triples than anyone in the country.
Kent State got the first run on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first on three walks, a hit batter, and no hits.
The Cardinals responded in the top of the second when Dobbins doubled to left field to lead off the inning. Cole drove in Dobbins with an RBI triple down the right field line. Adam Tellier gave BSU the lead on a sac fly to center. Peltier notched a double to left center and then stole third. CJ Horn grounded out to third, but Peltier was able to score and put Ball State up 3-1 after the top of the second.
Kent State scored two runs, on three walks, a hit batter, and no hits. The game was tied 3-3 after two innings. The Golden Flashes got on the board again in the bottom of the fifth on three hits and took a 4-3 lead into the top of the sixth.
Down to its final three outs, Tellier drew a six-pitch walk to lead off the top of the ninth for Ball State. Peltier doubled to left field to put runners on second and third with no outs. Matthew Rivera grounded out to second and picked up the RBI to tie the game. The Cardinals sent the game to the bottom of the ninth tied 4-4.
An error and a walk to start the bottom of the ninth proved to be costly for the Cardinals as the Golden Flashes were able to produce a walk-off hit and won the contest 5-4.
Ty Weatherly got the start on the mound for BSU and went one inning. He surrendered three earned runs on no hits and five walks as well as a hit batter. Max McKee went five innings of relief with a career-high five strikeouts. He gave up one earned run on four hits. Jake Lewis added a 1/3 of an inning. Mac Ayres added 1 2/3 innings with two strikeouts and surrendered one earned run on one hit. Ayres picked up the loss and fell to 0-1 on the year. Andre Orselli went 1/3 of an inning and gave up one hit.
Rocco Bernadina got the start on the mound for Kent State and went 6 2/3 innings. He struck out three and gave up three earned runs on five hits. Richie Dell went 1/3 of an inning. Evan Wolf added an inning of relief and surrendered one earned run on two hits. Asher Soltis got the win in one inning of relief and struck out one batter. He improved to 1-1.
The Cardinals return to action for the final time at the Ball Diamond at First Merchants Ballpark Complex on Friday, May 13. First pitch between Ball State and Ohio is scheduled for 3 p.m. on Friday.
