February 27, 2022 | Baseball
CONWAY, S.C. – The Ball State baseball team returned to Spring Brooks Stadium on Sunday for a game with Coastal Carolina. Rain shortened the game, but the Cardinals (2-5) fell to the Chanticleers (6-1) 7-2.

CCU got on the board first in the bottom of the second inning on a solo home run. The Chants added six more runs in the home half of the fourth to take a 7-0 lead. Michael Knorr was perfect for Coastal Carolina through four innings of work.

Trenton Quartermaine ended the perfect game and shutout with one swing of the bat as he launched a solo homer over the right field wall.
Aiden Hinds led off the top of the sixth with a single to left field. After an Amir Wright walk, Zach Lane reached on a fielder's choice, which put runners on the corners for BSU. Nick Powell ripped one to left field for an RBI single to cut the deficit to 7-2.

The game was called due to rain in the bottom of the seventh, which led to a 7-2 win for Coastal Carolina.

Ty Johnson got the start on the hill for the Cardinals. He went three innings with three strikeouts and six earned runs. Johnson fell to 0-1 on the season. Jake Lewis added an inning in relief with a strikeout and an earned run. Ryan Brown pitched 2 2/3 innings of solid relief with one strikeout and no hits given up.

Knorr went six innings in the win. He struck out six batters and gave up two earned runs on three hits. Darin Horn added an inning in relief with a strikeout.

The Cardinals close out the Carolinas Coastline Classic with a Monday contest against the Chanticleers. First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m.

From the Coach – Head Coach Rich Maloney
"Despite the loss, I was encouraged by the pitching of Ryan Brown. For his first college appearance, he really looked good. Our guys keep battling."
