Ball State Heads to Carolinas for Four Games

MUNCIE, Ind. – The Ball State baseball team makes a return trip to the Carolinas for the Carolinas Coastline Classic at UNCW and Coastal Carolina. The Cardinals will play four games in four days. Ball State will face Coastal Carolina twice, UNCW, and Middle Tennessee.
The Cardinals opened the season at the Swig & Swine Collegiate Classic and finished with a 2-2 record.
Sam Klein leads the Cardinal bullpen with two appearances in which he pitched 2 1/3 innings with a team-high six strikeouts, one hit, and no earned runs. Andre Orselli has one of the team's wins in two relief appearances. Orselli has five strikeouts, with just two earned runs surrendered, and only has one walk. Jake Lewis has the Cardinals' other win. In two relief appearances, Lewis has three strikeouts and has given up two earned runs in 1 2/3 innings.
Amir Wright has recorded a hit to lead off the game for BSU in all four games. Wright also leads the team with a .333 batting average with five hits, three walks, three runs scored, two doubles, and two stolen bases. Ryan Peltier is second on the squad hitting .300. Peltier has a team-high six walks with three hits, three doubles, three runs scored, three RBIs, and one stolen base. Hunter Dobbins had a stellar start to his freshman season with a 3-for-5 game against Bucknell with four RBIs and two home runs.

BSU and UNCW have met six times and the Seahawks lead the series 4-2. The Cardinals' last win came on March 9, 2010, while UNCW won the last meeting on Feb. 14, 2015, 4-2. Friday's probable pitching matchup is Tyler Schweitzer against Matt Gaither. In his first start, Schweitzer went 4 1/3 innings of work with five earned runs, four strikeouts, and four walks. In Gaither's first start, he pitched 5 1/3 innings with four strikeouts and three earned runs. Offensively, the Seahawks are led by Brooks Baldwin, the reigning Co-Player of the Week for the Colonial Athletic Association and he was also the preseason Co-Player of the Year. Baldwin has a .350 batting average on seven hits, six runs scored, five RBIs, and has five stolen bases.
BALL STATE VS. MIDDLE TENNESSEE: THE SERIES
This will mark the ninth meeting between the Cardinals and the Blue Raiders. Middle Tennessee leads the series 5-3, including four of the last five meetings. Ball State won the last meeting on Feb. 17, 2013, 5-1. Trennor O'Donnell and Zach Keenan are the projected starters for Saturday. O'Donnell picked up a no decision in his first start of the season behind 4 1/3 innings on the mound with five earned runs, four walks, and four strikeouts. Keenan has one start where he pitched six innings with three earned runs, three strikeouts, and one walk. Fausto Lopez leads the Middle Tennessee attack with a .412 batting average, seven hits, six RBIs, four runs scored, and two home runs.
CARDINALS VS. CHANTICLEERS: THE SERIES
Ball State and Coastal Carolina have met 14 times and all 14 times CCU has won. The last meeting was a 6-3 loss on March 2, 2018, at Coastal Carolina. In the Sunday matchup, Ty Johnson is scheduled to face Michael Knorr. Johnson leads Ball State with five innings of work with five strikeouts, two earned runs, and two walks. Knorr leads the pitching staff for Coastal Carolina with 6 1/3 innings, 10 strikeouts, no walks, and a 0.00 ERA. Monday's projected starter for CCU is Elliot Carney. Carney has one start where he went 4 1/3 innings with four strikeouts, three earned runs, and two walks. Eric Brown leads the Chanticleers as the Sun Belt Conference Preseason Player of the Year by Sun Belt coaches, Perfect Game, as well as D1 Baseball. Brown is ranked the No. 1 prospect from the 2022 MLB Draft Class. Brown is hitting .417 with five hits, four runs scored, and a double.
