Cardinals Outhit Seahawks but Fall
February 25, 2022 | Baseball
WILMINGTON, N.C. – The Ball State baseball team returned to the diamond for a road contest against UNCW on Friday. Amir Wright led the Cardinals with a 3-for-4 effort, but BSU fell to UNCW 2-0.
One timely hit turned out to be the difference in the game, as Brocks Baldwin's two-run homer in the third inning turned out to be the only run of the game.
Wright extended his hitting streak to five games after he led BSU with a 3-for-4 day at the plate. He notched a single, a double, a triple, and was a home run short of a cycle. Nick Powell had a strong day at the dish with a 2-for-3 performance. Zach Cole tallied the Cardinals' other hit for the game. The Cardinals left a total of eight base runners on.
Tyler Schweitzer picked up the loss but recorded a career-high seven strikeouts. He also pitched the most innings of his career with six innings of work. Ty Weatherly added two innings of shutout ball with three strikeouts and scattered just one hit.
Baldwin led the way for UNCW with a 3-for-3 day with a home run. He was the only Seahawk to record multiple hits. Ron Evans and Trevor Marsh added the other hits.
Matt Gaither picked up his first win of the season with eight strikeouts, one walk, and one hit batter in seven innings on the mound while he scattered five BSU hits. Hunter Hodges recorded his first save of the season with an inning of relief and three strikeouts.
The Cardinals return to action on Saturday, Feb. 26, as they face Middle Tennessee in a neutral-site contest at Coastal Carolina. First pitch is scheduled for 10 a.m.
From the Coach – Head Coach Rich Maloney
"We came a hair short in an outstanding pitcher duel. Tyler Schweitzer was impressive in his quality start. Ty Weatherly looked good in relief. We're back at it tomorrow."
