Cardinals on Wrong End of Pitcher’s Duel
February 26, 2022 | Baseball
CONWAY, S.C. – The Ball State baseball team made a short trip south to South Carolina for a neutral-site matchup with Middle Tennessee on Saturday. It was a pitcher's duel as both teams combined for just nine hits and only one run. Ball State (2-4) fell to Middle Tennessee (2-5) 1-0.
Trennor O'Donnell got the start on the mound for Ball State. He had six strikeouts in the first three innings. His counterpart, Zach Keenan had two strikeouts through three innings.
Brett Coker gave the Blue Raiders all the spark they needed as he sent one over the right center wall for a solo home run.
Zach Cole, Nick Powell, Zach Lane, and CJ Horn all produced singles for the Ball State offense. BSU stranded just three base runners on the day. The Cardinal defense was stout and had no errors.
The Cardinal pitching was solid once again, as O'Donnell and Zach Losey surrendered a combined five hits for the game. O'Donnell picked up the loss but had a strong outing in five innings with six strikeouts. O'Donnell only gave up two hits, but the solo homer proved to be costly. Losey pitched four innings in relief with two strikeouts and scattered three hits.
Keenan recorded a complete-game shutout with seven strikeouts, four hits, and two walks. Coker finished the game 2-for-4. Wyatt Morgan also went 2-for-4 at the plate and picked up the game's only other extra-base hit with a double.
Ball State is back on the diamond on Sunday, Feb. 27, for a game with Coastal Carolina with first pitch scheduled for 3 p.m. The Cardinals look to wake up the bats on Sunday.
From the Coach – Head Coach Rich Maloney
"It was another well-pitched game. Hats off to Trennor O'Donnell and Zach Losey on a job well done. We just have to keep grinding until we get our bats going."
