Women’s S&D Scores Dual Win At IUPUI

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - - The Ball State women's swimming & diving team turned in another strong performance, claiming 11 event wins on its way to a 189.5-109.5 victory over IUPUI Friday afternoon at the IUPUI Natatorium.
Four different swimmers claimed two individual wins apiece for the Cardinals (2-2; 0-2 MAC), who also swept the relays and earned its first diving victory of the season.
Ball State once again turned in a dominating effort in the freestyle, winning four of the five individual events. Sophomore Gracey Payne took home top honors in the two short sprints, touching the wall in 23.92 in the 50 and 52.05 in the 100.
Junior Marcella Ribeiro followed in the next two distances, trying for the top spot in the 200 freestyle (1:51.42) and claiming the solo win in the 500 (4:59.33).
Senior Laura Wright added an event sweep of her own, winning both the 100 (1:05.56) and 200 (2:20.22) breaststrokes.
Rounding out Ball State's individual two event winners was sophomore Hannah Jones who clocked in a 56.46 in the 100 butterfly and 56.72 in the 100 backstroke.
Freshman Maddy Hischer was the final individual winner, giving BSU its first diving event win of the season with a score of 260.03 on the 3M board.
In addition to their individual wins, Jones and Wright joined sophomore Lilia Newkirk and senior Apsara Sakbun on the first-place 400 medley relay (3:50.36) to open the meet.
Ribeiro and Payne would swim the final two legs of the first-place 400 freestyle relay (3:30.46) to close the meet, and they were joined by the Sakbun sisters, with Haley Sakbun swimming leadoff.
The Ball State women's swimming & diving program will focus on training over the next few weeks, before closing the first portion of the 2022-23 season at the Miami Invitational, which will be held Dec. 1-3.
