Wright, Ribeiro Earn Wins On Final Day Of Miami Invite

OXFORD, Ohio - - Junior Laura Wright and junior Marcella Ribeiro each collected event wins to lead the Ball State women's swimming & diving team to a strong finish Saturday on the final day of the Miami Invitational.

Wright turned in a time of 2:16.98 to take the top spot in the 200 breaststroke, while Ribeiro clocked in at 17:01.74 to lead a 1-2-3 Ball State finish in the 1650 freestyle.

The second-place time came from freshman Kiran Stauffer at 17:03.62, while freshman Callie Tuma took third at 17:05.41. The efforts rank as the fifth and seventh-best individual performances in program history, respectively.

The Cardinals also had a strong showing in the 100 freestyle, with freshman Payton Kelly placing third overall with the third-fastest mark in program history at 50.33. Senior Apsara Sakbun was not far behind, earning sixth with the sixth-best individual performance for a Ball State swimmer at 50.69.

Ball State also received a sixth-place finish, at 2:02.92, from sophomore Lilia Newkirk in the 200 backstroke.

Overall, the Cardinals placed third among the nine teams at the Nixon Aquatic Center with 693.5 points. Host Miami won the competition at  1276.5, while Grand Canyon took second at 866.

The Ball State women's swimming & diving program will once again turn its attention to training over the holiday break, with its next competition taking place Jan. 14 in a tri-meet at Indiana State with Southern Illinois.
