
Women's S&D Off To Strong Start At Miami Invite

OXFORD, Ohio - - Freshman Payton Kelly turned in another dominating effort, winning the 50 freestyle to lead the Ball State women's swimming & diving team on the opening day of the Miami Invitational.

Kelly started her day with the fourth-fastest effort in program history in the event, clocking in at 23.16 to lead the preliminary round. She would go on to clock a 23.59 in the finals to win the race by .19.

Not far behind was senior Apsara Sakbun who placed third in the 50 freestyle at 23.79. She also joined with Kelly on the third-place 200 freestyle relay which finished with the third-fastest mark in program history at 1:32.93.Â

Sophomore Hannah Jones swam the opening leg of the relay, followed by Sakbun, sophomore Gracey Payne, and Kelly.

A pair of Cardinals also earned top 10 program marks in the 500 freestyle, starting with freshman Kiran Stauffer who placed sixth overall with the fourth-fastest mark at 4:56.07. Freshman Callie Tuma added the 10th-best mark in the BSU record book at 4:59.44 in the prelims.

Rounding out a strong day were Jones, junior Laura Wright, senior Phoebe Rensink, and Kelly with the fifth-fastest 400 medley relay in program history at 3:44.87.

Day two of the Miami Invitational, which sees the Cardinals in third place among the nine-team field, gets underway at 9 a.m. Friday with preliminary action. Finals are set for 5 p.m.
