Ball State runs final regular season race in preparation for conference meet
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – A plethora of Ball State cross country runners set season-best times during the Cardinals' final run of the regular season Friday at the Falcon Invite.
Sarah Mahnensmith was the top finisher for Ball State as she crossed the line with a time of 22:01.9, good for 11th overall, in the 6k race. The time bested her previous mark by over a minute set earlier this season.
"Sarah is running really well right now," head coach Adrian Wheatley said. "It's exciting to see her in a good place from a racing and training standpoint. She's gaining confidence each week that she can run multiple styles of races and be competitive. Today was a little windy and there were some different terrains there, but what we have done all year long is put her in a position to be someone that's going to be competing to be All-MAC next week.
"The rest of the group competed hard. We had some season bests and some individuals who are continually putting some pieces together for the week. This was the last meet before the MAC Championships. What we've done all year long and being strategic in putting the schedule together the way that we did is putting us in the right position to compete at the MAC Championships in a couple weeks."
Vivian Van Eck was the next Cardinal to cross the line in 60th with a season-best time of 23:30.7, besting her previous time this season by 27 seconds.
"Vivian had a really consistent race, running really even across the 6k," Wheatley added. "We had a couple individuals make a surge on the back side of the race. It was good to see them out there being competitive."
Juliana Stogsdill was just eight seconds behind and finished 67th with a time of 23:38.5. She was chased closely by the trio of Sarah Greer, Jenna Schifferer and Grace Dean, all of which finished within 20 seconds of each other.
Greer crossed the line in 23:49.9, while Schifferer set a season-best time of 23:53.0, which was nearly 1:07 faster than her previous mark. Dean ran 1:40 faster than her last 6k race and ended in 23:57.3.
Jessica Velez was just four seconds away from Dean with a time of 24:01.
Autumn Spence, Ella Fullmer and Ashley Craycraft rounded out the Cardinal contingent and each set season-best times. Spence was 13 seconds faster at 24:37.1, while Fullmer bested her mark by nearly a minute at 24:50.6.
Craycraft showed the biggest jump by running 2:45 faster than her previous time after crossing the line in 25:22.7.
