Sophomore hits 5k PR time, finishes fourth out of 442
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Ball State's Sarah Mahnensmith ran a career-best 5k race to lead the Cardinals at the Live in Lou Classic Saturday. Mahnensmith's time of 17:47.9 was nearly 23 seconds better than her previous collegiate-best time of 18:10.7.
The sophomore placed fourth out of 442 runners and improved seven positions from 15th to eighth at the one-mile mark and ninth at the two-mile mark to close in fourth in the team's first 5k race of the season.
Sarah Greer was Ball State's next finisher at 18:53.6 - tying her collegiate-best mark - and crossing the line in 69th.
Vivan Van Eck move up 38 spots from the 2.1k mark and finished 86th with a time of 19:02.8.
Just behind her was Juliana Stogsdill, who crossed the line in 19:17.0 and placed 114th. Rounding out the scoring was Jessica Velez, who surged 45 spots up the individual leaderboard from the mid-way point of the race and finished 158th in a time of 19:39.0.
Other high risers who made up ground across the final portion of the race include Jocilyn Stackis (37 spots) in a time of 19:45.8, Autumn Spence (20 spots) in a time of 19:49.8, Grace Dean (20 spots) in a time of 19:55.0 and Jenna Schifferer (21 spots) in a time of 19:57.0.
As a team, Ball State finished ninth out of 47 teams in the Blue 5k race.
"It was exciting to see our young ladies compete today," head coach Adrian Wheatley said. "They managed the energy of a big invitational with controlled aggression. Several young ladies had lifetime and season personal bests. We will continue to ride this momentum here throughout the rest of the season. Every opportunity for us to compete is a dress rehearsal for the big show."
The Cardinals wrap up the regular season Oct. 14 at the Falcon Invite in Bowling Green, Ohio.
