Men’s Swimming Takes Third at Butler Invite

FISHERS, Ind. - - The Ball State men's swimming program tallied 11 top five performances on its way to a third-place finish at the Butler Invitational Sunday afternoon at Fishers High School.
The Cardinals scored 628 total points on the day, topping Youngstown State's total of 423. Xavier won the meet with 780 points, followed by UIndy in second at 747.
Sophomore Joey Garberick turned in a pair of top three swims, taking second in the 200 breaststroke (2:07.82) and third in the 100 breaststroke (57.03). He also swam the first leg of the third-place 400 freestyle relay which recorded a final touch of 3:09.84. He was joined on the relay by junior Owen Chaye, freshman Jack Wolfred and junior Duncan McLarty.
Junior Bryce Handshoe registered Ball State's other runner-up finish, clocking in at 51.13 in the 100 butterfly.
The Cardinals placed two swimmers in the top five in the meet's longest event, with junior Aiden Maurer taking third (16:54.87) and junior Zachary Moody placing fifth (17:06.23) in the 1650 freestyle.
A pair of Ball State freshmen claimed top five efforts in the 200 butterfly, with Michael Mitsynskyy placing third (1:56.03) and Eli Germain earning fifth (1:59.10).
BSU also scored top five finishes in the 200 freestyle by senior Ryan Short (5th / 1:44.09), in the 100 backstroke by freshman Ethan Pheifer (4th / 53.12), and in the 500 freestyle by sophomore Zach Zishka (5th / 4:50.79).
The Ball State men's swimming & diving program closes the regular season Saturday (Feb. 5), when it hosts Valparaiso in swimming and UIndy in diving at 1 p.m. in the Lewellen Aquatic Center. The meet will serve as senior day for the Cardinals.
