Seven-Run Third Carries Softball to Series Win Over Ohio
April 25, 2021 | Softball
Â
Ball State used a 19th Sunday to answer a five-run third from the Bobcats (17-18; 13-13 MAC) and finish the weekend with an 11-7 win and a 3-1 series victory.
Â
After falling behind 6-1 in the series finale, thanks to Ohio's five-spot in the third, the Cardinals wasted little time retaliating, posting seven runs on the scoreboard in the bottom of the frame to reclaim the lead and ultimately earn the victory.
Â
The Cardinals sent 11 batters to the plate in the inning, with a two-run home run from junior left fielder Faith Hensley tying the score and an RBI single from senior center fielder Kennedy Wynn pushing Ball State ahead.
Â
However, it was some heads up base running from redshirt sophomore second baseman Jazmyne Armendariz which scored what proved to be the eventual game-winning run. With Armendariz at second and K. Wynn on first, a high throw by the third baseman on a grounder by sophomore third baseman Haley Wynn kept the inning alive.Â
Â
After the high throw, however, K. Wynn took off for third and got half way there drawing a throw to the shortstop covering the bag. A rundown ensued, and Armendariz sneakily made her way home for the pivotal run.
Â
Ironically, the Cardinals actually took a 1-0 lead early in the contest after freshman shortstop Kayla Lissy recorded a one-out single in the top of the first, stole second and moved to third on a passed ball. Senior right fielder Haley Dominique would drive her home in the next at bat with a sac fly to left.
Â
Lissy was a big part of the Cardinals success on the day, as she went 4-for-4, with three runs scored and one RBI. She missed a home run by a fraction of an inch as the ball bounced off the top of the fence in landed back in play for an RBI double which drove in the first run in BSU's seven-run third.
Â
Lissy also finished the game with three stolen bases, moving her season total to a perfect 13-for-13. In fact, following her double in the third, she was eventually able to steal home.
Â
While Ohio was able to tie the score at 1-1 in the top of the second, and pull ahead 6-1 after a five-run third, Ball State scored nine straight to regain control of the game.
Â
Following the seven-run third, BSU scored two more runs in the fourth, on RBI singles from senior catcher Stacy Payton and Hensley. Ohio was able to get one back in the fifth, but the Cardinals responded with an RBI single from Armendariz in the sixth to cap the scoring.
Â
Junior Tieghan Morio earned the pitching win for Ball State, entering after Ohio's five runs in the third and stopping the rally with a pop up and a little help from Payton who followed a walk by catching the runner trying to steal second.
Â
Overall, Morio held the Bobcats to one run and two hits over her 4.2 innings of work. She also struck out five, including getting Ohio's final batter swinging. She improved to 8-2 in the year with the win.
Â
Ball State is scheduled to return to action Wednesday, when it welcomes Miami to the Softball Field at First Merchants Ballpark Complex for another key MAC doubleheader. The Cardinals enter the twin bill with a 19-2 league record, while the RedHawks are 21-1.
Â
While there is no general public attendance at Ball State home games this season due to the ongoing COVID-19 global pandemic and resulting department of health guidance, fans can still watch the action with both games being broadcast on ESPN+. Live stats will also be available for both contest.
