MUNCIE, Ind. - - Pete Berrios, who led Bryant & Stratton College softball to the 2024 National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II World Series, has joined the Ball State softball program as an assistant coach according to head coach Helen Peña.
"I'm thrilled to add the experience and passion that Pete brings with him to our program," Peña said. "A tremendous teacher of the game with a passion to empower athletes, he fits our culture and will make an immediate impact. I look forward to seeing what we as a staff can accomplish together!"
In four seasons (2023-26) leading the Bobcats out of Virginia Beach, Virginia, Berrios helped the squad amass a 140-77-1 overall record. Prior to his arrival, the program had a combined 17 wins over its first five seasons of existence.
"It is a true honor to have the opportunity to represent Ball State University," Berrios said. "Coach Peña and her staff have made this softball program a special place to be. I look forward to making a difference and helping the student-athletes within the program reach their full potential and to lead in a very positive way. Thank you, Ball State University, and thank you Coach Peña! Go Cards."
Thanks to Berrios' energy and optimism, the program not only made its first-ever appearance in the NJCAA Division II World Series but also won conference and regional championships. In addition, his 2024 squad put together a program-record 22 game winning streak and ranked as high as 14th in the nationally polls.
World-renowned for developing the "Pure Hitting" method, which focuses on progressive hitting enhancement and serves as the foundation of his professional hitting instruction, Berrios spent the two summers prior to his arrival in Virginia Beach as a summer league mentor for collegiate players.
In the summer of 2021, he served as the Director of Player Development for the NCAA Carolina Collegiate Softball League. During the 2020 collegiate off season, he was a head coach in the Florida Gulf Coast Collegiate Summer League.
An assistant coach at Furman for the 2020 season, Berrios made his softball collegiate head coaching debut at Chestnut Hill College during the 2019 season. He guided the Griffins to 18 wins that season, an improvement of 12 games from the previous year.
Overall, Berrios brings over 33 years of experience, including high school, elite travel, and professional baseball teams, to Muncie. His experience includes working as an instructor at some of the best-known baseball and softball training facilities in the country.
Highlighting that list are stops at Stars and Stripes Sports as the National Baseball & Softball Director (2011-2019), the Georgia Academy (2007-2011) and the PB Baseball Academy & Pure Hitting Program (1999-2007). Professionally, he spent time as the Manager and Director of Baseball Operations in the Frontier League (1997-1999) and as Assistant Manager in Medford, Oregon, for the Oakland A's organization (1996).
Berrios is a former collegiate baseball player at Madonna University (1988-1991).
