Softball Suffers Saturday Setback to Ohio
April 24, 2021 | Softball
MUNCIE, Ind. - - The Ball State softball team could not recapture Friday's come-from-behind magic, suffering a 3-1 loss to Ohio Saturday afternoon in Mid-American Conference action at the Softball Field at First Merchants Ballpark Complex.
Â
Like Friday's opener, the Cardinals (24-12; 18-2 MAC) quickly found themselves in a 2-0 hole after the top of the first inning.
Â
Unfortunately, the Bobcats (17-17; 13-12 MAC) were able to limit a potent Ball State offense to just one run, while adding an insurance run of their own late in the game, to escape with a 3-1 victory.
Â
After the two-run first, the score remained 2-0 until the Cardinals came up to bat in the bottom of the fifth. Freshman shortstop Kayla Lissy opened the inning with a bunt single, and after stealing second, came around to score on a RBI single to left from senior right fielder Haley Dominique.
Â
That was the only run the Bobcats would allow, however, and they countered with one of their own in the top of the sixth to give the game its finals score of 3-1.
Â
Lissy and Dominique had two hits each for Ball State, as did senior catcher Delanie Johnson. The Cardinals finished the game with seven hits, with the other coming in the form of a single from sophomore third baseman Haley Wynn in the third.
Â
In the circle, sophomore Deborah Jones was able to limit the Bobcats to four hits and three runs, only two of which were earned, over her 6.0 innings of work. She also struck out three in a losing effort.
Â
Senior Alyssa Rothwell pitched the final inning for Ball State, retiring three of the four batters she faced, including a strikeout to end her appearance.
Â
Ball State will look to pick up the series victory Sunday, when the teams square off for another noon first pitch.
Â
Unfortunately, due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and resulting department of health guidance, there will be no general public attendance at Ball State softball home games this season. However, free live video and live stats can be found on the softball schedule page of BallStateSports.com.
