Complete Team Effort Drives Women’s Tennis Past Toledo
March 28, 2021 | Women's Tennis
MUNCIE, Ind. - Time and time again the Cardinals have played well this season under pressure and today was no different which is a true testament to Ball State's head coach Max Norris who helped lead his squad to yet another Mid-American Conference victory over Toledo Sunday afternoon at the Northwest YMCA.
Ball State (14-2, 5-0 MAC) continues to ride 14-match win streak this spring while remaining untouched in league action after winning yet another close 4-3 competition against the Toledo Rockets (6-7, 2-3 MAC).
Currently, Ball State stands atop of the MAC standings as the lone league team without a loss.
The doubles competition has proven to be a strong suite for Ball State this season and the Cardinals proved that yet again today by taking a quick 1-0 advantage over the Rockets early on in the match.
At first, doubles play looked a bit gloomy after Toledo took court one from BSU.
But the Cardinals quickly answered as Livia Lukacs paired up with teammate Victoria Sec, posting yet another take down on court three, defeating Ava McQuillin and Julia Kuszynski, 6-2.
With one doubles' spot remaining, Jessica Braun and Silvia Martinez would finally clinch the final point for the Cardinals after beating Laura Morera and Patricia Panta, 6-3.
Today's singles action was like a movie sequel from the Cardinals performance on Friday where Ball State would quickly move its lead to a comfortable 3-0 after Rebecca Herrington and Mariya Polishchuk won in straight sets over the Rockets No. 4 and No. 3 positions, respectively.
After that, Toledo didn't back down, earning victories on the top two courts to make it a 3-2 match.
With two courts left, the game-winning match for the Cardinals would be decided in a three- set thriller from Amy Kaplan at the No. 5 slot as she defeated Panta, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1.
The Ball State women's tennis team will host Butler on Tuesday in non-conference action at 3 p.m. ET at the Cardinal Creek Tennis Center, weather permitting.
