Women’s Tennis Prevails Yet Again, Defeats Buffalo 4-3
April 03, 2021 | Women's Tennis
BUFFALO, N.Y. - It was the Cardinals off weekend, but Ball State decided to go ahead and travel to Buffalo to make up a match that had been postponed on the Bulls behalf earlier in March due to the protocols of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Cardinals (15-2, 6-0 MAC) got their 15th straight win of the season after defeating the Buffalo Bulls (4-4, 1-4 MAC) in a 4-3 thriller Saturday afternoon at the Miller Tennis Center.
With the win, Ball State still remains atop of the Mid-American Conference standings as the lone team with an unblemished league ledger.
"We chose to take on this challenge and make this road trip," Ball State head coach Max Norris said. "Buffalo is a very good team, and they always compete very hard. We knew this was going to be a match that tested us. We got everything thrown at us and I'm proud of the way we responded. Go cards!!"
Norris, who is in his eighth season at the helm of the Cardinals, has certainly taking the Ball State women's tennis program to new heights since his arrival making Ball State one of the top teams to reckon with in the MAC.
Ball State again jumped out to an early 1-0 advantage after taking the doubles point from Buffalo posting wins on courts two and one, respectively.
Jessica Braun alongside her doubles partner Silvia Martinez won 6-4 while Amy Kaplan and Emma Peeler gave up only two games to Pia Schwarz and Ambre Amat, claiming the 6-2 victory on the top court.
In singles, Silvia Martinez was the first finisher as she flew by her opponent on court six, 6-0, 6-1. Mariya Polishchuk followed closely behind Martinez and pushed BSU's edge to three points after her 6-2, 7-5 defeat over Amat.
UB's Hsin-Yuan Shih gave the Bulls their first point of the match after taking court four from Ball State.
But BSU would crush Buffalo's comeback attempt as Amy Kaplan earned the game-winning match for the Cardinals at the No. 5 singles position with her 6-4, 7-5 take down over Azra Deniz Comiek.
The Ball State women's tennis team will continue Mid-American Conference action on the road on April 9 at Northern Illinois. First serve is at 2 p.m. ET at the Boylan Tennis Center in Rockford, Ill.
