Ball State breaks nearly 8-year-old school record for tournament score
DADE CITY, Fla. -- School records fell this week at Lake Jovita.
Â
Monday it was the 18-hole record. Tuesday it was the 54-hole tournament record.
Â
The Ball State women's golf team finished the Spring Break Shootout with a score of 882. That's six strokes better than the program's previous best mark of 888 set at the Hoosier Fall Invitational in October 2013.
Â
The Cardinals backed up their school-record round of 286 from a day earlier with a score of 295 in Tuesday's final round, led by an even-par 71 from Hadley Moritz and a 1-over 72 from Liz Kim. Kiah Parrott and Morgan Lewis, coming off rounds of 69, closed with 75 and 77, respectively, for the other counting scores on this day.
Â
Moritz (T18), Kim (T21) and Lewis (T21) all finished within a single shot of each other over 54 holes this week to place among the top 25 individually. Kim and Lewis set career bests with 54-hole scores of 221. Moritz shot 220.
Â
Ball State took sixth overall in the 15-team field, just two shots behind fifth-place Troy and three behind fourth-place Florida Gulf Coast. The Cardinals convincingly handled the other four MAC teams in the field – Toledo, Akron, Bowling Green and Ohio – beating them all by at least 24 strokes.
Â
North Florida, the nation's 42nd-ranked team, entered the final day with a share of the lead and pulled away for a six-shot victory with a final total of 857.
Â
Ball State now has two regular season tournaments remaining as it builds toward the MAC Championships. The Cardinals will return to action March 29-30 with Eastern Kentucky's Colonel Classic in Richmond, Kentucky.
