Rounds of 69 from Morgan Lewis, Kiah Parrott lead BSU to afternoon team score of 286
DADE CITY, Fla. -- The morning round for the Ball State women's golf team was okay. The afternoon round was historic.
Â
The Cardinals broke the school record for team 18-hole score with a 286 (+2) in Monday's second round on the South Course at Lake Jovita Golf & Country Club. It was three strokes better than the previous record of 289 set at the UNLV Invitational in March 2010 and matched at the Hoosier Fall Invitational in October 2013.
Â
Ball State improved by 15 strokes over its opening round to vault five spots up the leaderboard into fifth place at the two-thirds mark of the Spring Break Shootout.
Â
Morgan Lewis and Kiah Parrott led the way with 2-under-par rounds of 69, marking career bests for both. Lewis, a junior from Fishers, made four birdies against two bogeys in the afternoon. Parrott, a freshman from Kokomo, birdied three of her final five holes to finish with five of them for the round, all on Lake Jovita's back nine.
Â
Ball State also counted scores of 74 from Liz Kim and Hadley Moritz in the school-record round. That pair also matched each other with opening rounds of 75 to go along with another 75 from Lewis and a 76 from Tiegan Taylor.
Â
Lewis is the top BSU player on the individual leaderboard in a tie for eighth place at 2 over par with one round left to play.
Â
Top-50 program North Florida and Western Kentucky share the lead in the 15-team field with 36-hole totals of 570 (+2). Ball State sits fifth at 587 (+19), leading each of the four other competing MAC teams by 14 strokes or more.
