Owen Chaye notches four combined individual and relay victories
MUNCIE, Ind. -- Ball State won 11 of 16 events Saturday, highlighted by a pool record in the 400 medley relay, to cruise to a 180-108 victory over MAC foe Southern Illinois in men's swimming & diving.
Â
"I was really excited to see the way the boys came out and raced," head coach J. Agnew said. "We had a great week of practice. They were pretty beat up, pretty tired, and they raced beyond my expectation today. It was a great meet for us."
Â
The Cardinals improved to 4-0 on the season with one meet left -- a March 6 date at Miami -- before April's MAC Championships.
Â
The 400 medley relay team of Aiden Maurer, Joey Garberick, Bryce Handshoe and Owen Chaye got the Cardinals off to a fast start. The quartet's winning time of 3:26.13 bested the previous Lewellen Aquatic Center mark of 3:26.98 set nine years ago.
Â
"That pool record, I think it was a shock to all of us," Agnew said. "The way we've been training, to knock down a pool record at a meet like this, just a regular dual meet, regular suits, was great for these guys and really exciting."
Â
Chaye and Garberick each went on to add two individual event wins. Chaye won the 50 free in 21.40 and the 100 free in 46.77, while Garberick took the 100 breast in 56.86 and the 200 breast in 2:08.93.
Â
Isaac Hunter was another two-time winner on the day, sweeping the diving events with scores of 285.15 on the 1 meter and 302.12 on the 3 meter.
Â
Ball State also collected event victories from Handshoe in the 100 fly (52.47), Jackson Ketcham in the 200 fly (1:58.53), Ryan Short in the 1,000 free (10:03.19) and the 200 free relay team of Jack Wolfred, Patrick White, Drew Weeks and Chaye (1:24.75).
Â
Chaye finished the day with four combined individual and relay wins.
Â
Adam Cernek accounted for three of Southern Illinois' five event wins on the day, taking the 100 and 200 backstroke and the 200 IM.
