December 06, 2021 | Men's Volleyball
MUNCIE, Ind. - The Ball State men's volleyball team has released its 2022 schedule as the Cardinals begin a new era under the direction of first-year head coach Donan Cruz.
The Cardinals will open their first five matches at home beginning on Jan. 13 at 7 p.m. versus Maryville. Ball State will also host Tusculum (Jan. 15) and George Mason (Jan. 21).
Cruz has also scheduled some heavy hitters in non-conference action highlighted by a two-match series at home in Worthen Arena against the defending National Championship the University of Hawai'i which will be played on Jan. 29 and Jan. 31.
"We are going to challenge ourselves early with great non-conference opponents in the first four weeks," Cruz said. "Among those matches, having George Mason and Hawai'i at home in January, we expect both physical play and solid ball control from both opponents. The opportunity to host the defending National Champions in Worthen Arena is going to be great for both our team and our fans."
Ball State will then have a tough road stretch where the Cardinals will first travel to national runner-up Brigham Young University (BYU) for back-to-back matches (Feb. 4-5).
Ball State opens Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (MIVA) action on the road at Lewis University on Feb. 10 and will then close their first league weekend with a visit to McKendree on Feb. 12. The Cardinals will also travel to Ohio State (March 16), Quincy (March 25), Lindenwood (March 26), Loyola University (April 7) and Purdue Fort Wayne (April 9) during league play.
The Cardinals will host seven MIVA matches in Worthen Arena against Purdue Fort Wayne (Feb. 17), Loyola University (Feb. 19), Lindenwood (Feb. 24), Quincy (Feb. 25), Ohio State (March 19), McKendree (March 31) and Lewis (April 2).
"Fall Training has been a lot of learning and acclimation for both players and coaches," Cruz said. "We improved in many areas systematically and are always evolving our team cohesiveness. There is still room to grow as we look ahead to the 2022 season. I look forward to what this group can do as we kick off in the next six weeks. Our team is motivated and excited to compete. Our practices have been competitive, and we are confident our veteran players will lead us into our opener January 13."
The MIVA tournament quarterfinals are set for April 16 with the semifinals slated for April 20 and the championship match on April 23. The NCAA Play-in match is scheduled for April 30, and the remainder of NCAA Tournament will be hosted by UCLA in Los Angeles, Calif., May 3-7.
