Cardinals Fall to Golden Flashes

KENT, Ohio – The Ball State soccer team returned to action on Sunday in Kent, Ohio, for a Mid-American Conference matchup with Kent State. The Cardinals (4-8-2, 2-4-2) fell to the Golden Flashes (10-4-1, 6-1-1) 3-0 from Dix Stadium.
The Cardinals came out swinging to start the match as Lexy Smith recorded the first shot of the match at the five-minute mark but was unable to find the back of the net. The Golden Flashes responded with a shot on target at the 10-minute mark, but Alex DeRuvo was able to make the stop.
In the 12th minute, Karly Hellstrom gave Kent State an early lead has she found the back of the net for the match's first goal.
In the 23rd minute, Sammi Corcoran ripped a ball on frame, but the Kent State goalie parried the shot over the crossbar.
Beginning at the 27th minute, Ball State rattled off three shots on goal in three minutes but were unable to get into the back of the net. The shots came from Nicky Potts, Melissa Diceman, and Tatiana Mason. BSU added another shot on frame at the 31st-minute mark as Lexi Fraley had a good scoring chance, but the KSU keeper pushed the shot just wide of the left post.
DeRuvo recorded a huge save in the 33rd minute as she stopped a scoring chance from Kent State.
In the 38th minute, Ball State was given a red card that left the Cardinals shorthanded for the remainder of the match.
Emily Simmons posted the first shot on goal in the second half in the 47th minute, but the KSU netminder made the stop.
After DeRuvo made a big stop at the 53rd-minute mark to keep the Cardinal deficit at one, Diceman put a ball on frame at the other end but was unable to beat the KSU goalie. In the 69th minute, Abby Elgert added a shot on target but was unable to find the back of the net.
The Golden Flashes added two goals, one from Lauryn Arruda and the second from Siena Stambolich, which gave KSU a 3-0 lead.
Potts recorded two more shots on target and Mason added another, but the Cardinals were unable to get on the scoreboard.
Ball State will be back on the pitch on Thursday, Oct. 21, as the Cardinals make a trip to Kalamazoo, Michigan, for a MAC contest with Western Michigan. First touch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
