Simpson Has A Day In Series Finale At Houston Baptist

Cardinals take 2 of 3 games on road
Ball State (2-4) finished the weekend with a pair of extra-inning wins to take two of three in the series.
"We dug ourselves a big hole by giving up the big inning," head coach Rich Maloney said. "I'm proud of the way our boys battled back. We won the series but didn't quite get the prize."
Simpson led off the game with a triple in the left-center gap and would score moments later on a single by Ross Messina. Simpson then tripled again in the top of the 3rd and doubled in the 5th. With the score 10-3, he ignited Ball State's comeback attempt with a two-run double in the 6th. Trenton Quartermaine singled and scored that inning as BSU got back in the game down just 10-5.
Ball State scored three more times late but would run out of outs. Devin Porter had an RBI triple in the 7th and Noah Navarro slugged a pinch-hit RBI double in the 8th that scored Quartermaine again. BSU would bring the tying run to the plate in the 9th innings before Houston Baptist survived. Â
HBU (2-6) scored nine times on seven hits in the bottom of the 4th, with a three-run homer by Johnny Gonzales serving as the key blow.
The Cardinals are going to the Carolina for spring break. Nine games are on the schedule, starting with four in Greenville Feb. 28-March 1.Â
