
Errors Prove Costly in Baseball’s 6-3 Loss to Western Carolina

GREENVILLE, S.C. – The Ball State baseball team opened play at the First Pitch Invitational with a 6-3 loss to Western Carolina Friday evening.
All six Western Carolina (6-3) runs were unearned as Ball State (2-5) committed a season-high four errors. The Catamounts capitalized on a fielding error in the bottom of the fifth to score four runs to take a 4-2 lead. The Cardinals had taken a 2-0 lead in the top of the frame thanks to a pair of WCU errors.
Ball State had a chance to put up a crooked number in the seventh inning but could only score one run after beginning the frame with a Zach Cole single, Chase Sebby double and Ryan Peltier RBI single.
Western Carolina responded with a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the seventh thanks to a Daniel Walsh's two-run single. Righty Zebby Matthews went the distance on the mound for WCU, giving up five hits and one earned run.
FIFTH INNING SPOILS GOOD START BY BAKER
Senior righty John Baker cruised through the first four innings. He kept WCU off the scoreboard through the fourth while striking out four batters and only allowing two hits. Baker finished with a line of 5.2 innings, six hits, no earned runs (four runs), seven strikeouts and one walk.

The Cardinals are right back in action tomorrow, Feb. 29, with a doubleheader against Kansas. Game one is set to begin at 10 a.m.
