Walton Earns 400th Victory with BSU’s First Win at Loyola Since 1999
February 23, 2020 | Men's Volleyball
CHICAGO – It was a historic night for the Ball State men's volleyball program Saturday as head coach Joel Walton recorded the 400th victory of his career and the Cardinals picked up their first win at Loyola since 1999.
BSU improved to 9-5 for the season and 2-2 in MIVA play with the win while Loyola dropped to 5-10 overall and 2-3 in the MIVA.
The milestones appeared to be in doubt early with Ball State digging itself in a 2-0 hole to start the match. The Cardinals were able to rally though and completed the reverse sweep to snap the losing streak to the Ramblers on their home floor.
"I'm grateful to Ball State for giving me the opportunity to be in charge of such a fantastic program," Walton said. "I'm grateful to all the guys who have played for me and put in so much work and also my staff who has been with me for almost all these wins. Most of all I'm grateful to my family for hanging in there with me all these years. Being the family of a coach is never easy. This is a huge accomplishment, but I couldn't have done it without all these people."
Walton is now just the ninth coach in the history of Division I men's volleyball to record 400 career wins. He also owns the second-most wins among active head coaches at the Division I level.
Ball State held set point in set two with the score at 24-22. The Ramblers then scored four-straight points to come back and take a commanding 2-0 lead in the match. BSU confidently won set three but appeared to be fading when Loyola led the fourth set 20-17. The Cardinals were able to rally and complete the comeback to even the match at two apiece. Ball State then left no doubt in the fifth set by racing out to a 7-1 lead and closing the set 15-8.
"It's awesome to see the guys perform the way they did," Walton said. "It's a thrill to win the way we did, and this should give our guys a lot of confidence. There's so much fight in this team."
Blake Reardon and Kaleb Jenness were the spark for BSU with 26 and 23 kills, respectively. Setter Quinn Isaacson recorded an impressive 67 assists while his team hit an efficient .356. Felix Egharevba led the Cardinals in blocks with three while Reardon had a match-high 15 digs.
Ball State will continue its four-match road swing next week with contests at Lindenwood and Quincy.
