Closing Stretch Derails Men’s Golfers in Final Round at Trinity Forest
September 24, 2019 | Men's Golf
Cardinals finish 11th, led by top-25 performances from Bronnenberg, Ranieri
COMPLETE RESULTS
DALLAS -- The first five rounds of the season could only be described as highly successful for the 20th-ranked Ball State men's golf team.
The Cardinals blew the doors off the field in their three rounds at the Golfweek Conference Challenge and scored well enough in the first two this week to make a run at a top-5 finish at the Trinity Forest Invitational.
But the team hit its first adversity of the year on the home stretch Tuesday and left Dallas with a bitter taste after dropping into a tie for 11th on the final leaderboard. BSU made the turn with a fairly comfortable hold on seventh place but played the final nine holes in 12 over par.
The Cardinals finished tied with 2019 NCAA Regional teams Mississippi State and Sam Houston State (there were seven regional squads in the 17-team field). There's certainly no shame in that, but there is the feeling it was a bit of a missed opportunity.
No team was going to track down third-ranked Arizona State or tournament host SMU, who entered the final day tied for the lead and 10 shots clear of the field. The Sun Devils edged the Mustangs by four shots Tuesday to take the title, while ASU's Alex del Rey won medalist honors by five strokes at 16 under par.
Ball State's Joey Ranieri and Keegan Bronnenberg turned in steady performances for the tournament and tied for 23rd place at 1 under. Ranieri's week was bolstered by a career-best 67 in Monday's second round.
Bronnenberg led the way for BSU with an even-par 71 on Tuesday, while Ranieri shot 73. The Cardinals also counted rounds of 76 from CJ Jones and Yianni Kostouros.
Though disappointed with the finish, Ball State has plenty of opportunities against strong fields still ahead this fall. The Cardinals' next two events are the Marquette Intercollegiate at Erin Hills (Oct. 6-8) and the Crooked Stick Invitational (Oct. 14-15).
