Men’s Golf Leaves Erin Hills with Solid Round
October 08, 2019 | Men's Golf
Joey Ranieri finishes under par for third straight tournament
FINAL RESULTS
ERIN, Wis. -- It wasn't the final result the Ball State men's golf team was hoping for, but at least the Cardinals dealt Erin Hills a parting shot with an under-par final round Tuesday.
BSU's 287 (-1) was its best of the week and enough to climb one spot to an 11th-place finish in the Marquette Intercollegiate. Inconsistent play over the first two days at the site of the 2017 U.S. Open made it difficult for the Cardinals to move any higher.
Overnight leader Purdue held off Northwestern by two shots to win the tournament, while Marquette's Hunter Eichhorn and South Florida's Luke Gifford shared medalist honors at 7 under par.
Ball State sophomore Joey Ranieri finished six shots off the pace as the top Cardinal on the leaderboard in a tie for 12th. His closing 69 (-3) moved him to 1 under par for the tournament and put him in red figures for the third straight event to start the year.
Ranieri led the field in par-3 scoring at 2 under for the week and racked up 14 birdies, the fourth-most in the field, including six of them over the closing 18 holes.
Ball State also counted a 72 from Tyler Green and a pair of 73's from Keegan Bronnenberg and CJ Jones in the final round. Green played the final 36 holes in 2 over par, second-best on the team, after a slow start in his BSU lineup debut.
Similarly, Joey Wiseman finished strong. The freshman, competing as an individual in his first collegiate event, closed with a 72 and played the last two rounds at 1 over.
The Marquette Intercollegiate featured 10 teams ranked among the nation's top 115. Ball State will continue its stretch of challenging events at tour-level venues next week at the Crooked Stick Invitational. The tournament runs Monday and Tuesday in Carmel.
