Baker, Jaksich throw no-hitter against Ohio
MUNCIE, Ind. – Another athletic year quickly flew by for the Cardinals. Ball State student-athletes, coaches and teams accomplished several notable feats in 2018-19.
Through much discussion, BallStateSports.com has identified the top storylines of the year. We are revealing the storylines once a week throughout the summer months of June and July.
The stories are being revealed in chronological order, beginning with the fall season and running through the spring. We continue with a look back at baseball's special 5-0 win over Ohio on May 11.
Baker and Jaksich Combine for No-Hitter Versus Ohio
The 2019 Ball State baseball season featured a lot of impressive feats, including a pitching performance on May 11 that stands alone in school history.
With first team All-MAC pitcher John Baker on the mound, a no-hitter was often in play. Baker took a no-no into the 7th inning at Northern Illinois on May 4, and then did one better on May 11 vs. Ohio. The junior right-hander, who was drafted by the Miami Marlins, pitched 7.0 innings of no-hit ball with nine strikeouts. At 116 pitches, Baker then handed the ball to left Lukas Jaksich, who got the final outs and to complete the no-hitter.
It was the third no-hitter (and the first that covered nine innings) in Ball State history:
April 11, 1996 - Chris Cabaj, Bill Danner, Jamie Spottz vs. Taylor (5 innings)
May 9, 1992 - Curt Conley vs. Miami (7 innings)
May 11, 2019 - Baker, Jaksich vs. Ohio (9 innings)
The Cardinals swept that series, marched on to a 23-1 record at home and finished the season 38-19 overall.
