Top Stories of 2018-19: Indoor Practice Facility Becoming a Reality

MUNCIE, Ind. – Another athletic year quickly flew by for the Cardinals. Ball State student-athletes, coaches and teams accomplished several notable feats in 2018-19.
Through much discussion, BallStateSports.com has identified the top storylines of the year. We are revealing the storylines once a week throughout the summer months of June and July.
The stories are being revealed in chronological order, beginning with the fall season and running through the spring. We continue with a look back at the announcement for a new indoor practice facility.
Ball State University Announces Plans for Indoor Practice Facility
It had been talked about for years, but the ball finally began rolling for an indoor practice facility for Athletics in early May.
At the Ball State University Board of Trustees meeting on May 3, the unit announced the approval for a $15 million indoor practice facility. The 84,000 square-foot facility will feature a field-turf surface measuring 360' x 160' and regulation-sized competition field with a ceiling height of 65'. Retractable netting, batting cages and storage will provide the necessary amenities for teams to conduct training.
The facility will be conveniently located adjacent to the Fisher Training Complex on the current footprint of the grass practice fields. The space will be utilized by the football, softball, baseball and soccer teams during inclement weather. It will also provide additional opportunities for the entire campus and broader community, including the Pride of Mid-America Marching Band.
The new structure will be named the Scheumann Family Indoor Practice Facility in honor of June and John Scheumann, '71, who made the lead gift. The field inside the practice facility will be named Briner Field to honor Peggy and Kenneth Briner, '69. Meanwhile, the field within Scheumann Stadium will now be called Gainbridge Field to recognize the donation from company executive Daniel Towriss, '94, and his wife, Heather.
About 90% of the anticipated total cost of the privately financed building has been committed. Fundraising for the remaining costs is underway. Pending necessary State approvals, the University will select an Architect and Construction Manager. Once selected, the design and construction process is expected to take about 24 months with the opening in the Summer 2021.
