Top Stories of 2018-19: Drey Goes 1st Round
July 30, 2019 | Baseball
No baseball program in the MAC or in the state of Indiana has produced first round MLB draft picks like Ball State has. This spring, Drey Jameson became Ball State's eighth first-rounder when he was taken 34th overall by the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Â
Jameson, the 2019 MAC Pitcher of the Year and a Collegiate Baseball News All-American, attracted scores of scouts during his starts this season. He struck out a conference-record 146 batters while going 6-3 with a 3.24 ERA. He held batters to a .219 average and had seven starts with 10+ strikeouts, including 16 on May 3 at Northern Illinois and 13 on March 29 vs. Kent State.
Days after being selected in the draft, Jameson, head coach Rich Maloney and Diamondbacks scout Jeremy Kehrt addressed media and Ball State supporters before Jameson headed to join his new employer.
Â
In addition to Jameson going in the first round, fellow All-MAC pitcher John Baker was drafted by Miami in the 29th round. Those two aces led the Cardinals to a 38-19 record and the pitching staff led the nation with 11.1 strikeouts per 9 innings.Â
