April 04, 2019 | Men's Volleyball
Lebanon, Ill. – The Ball State men's volleyball team appeared to be headed for an easy win after a dominant win in set one, but McKendree came storming back to take a 2-1 lead and force the Cardinals to win the match in five sets Thursday night.
The win gave Ball State a 15-13 record overall and improved its conference record to 6-7. The Cardinals also stayed alive in the hunt to secure a first-round matchup in the upcoming MIVA Tournament.
BSU totaled 53 kills on a .191 hitting percentage while holding McKendree to 47 kills on a .114 attack percentage. The Cardinals had 52 assists on their 53 kills and compiled five service aces while accumulating 54 digs. Ball State also finished the night with 13 blocks.
Ball State was red hot to open the match as it cruised to a 25-12 set one victory. The Bearcats responded and controlled set two before winning 25-19. Set three was close all the way, but McKendree made the plays at the end to go up 2-1.
The fourth game was back and forth again, and the Cardinals faced defeat with the Bearcats holding a 25-24 set point. McKendree served the ball into the net to breathe new life into BSU, and David Siebum put away the game-clinching kill to lift Ball State to a 28-26 victory.
The decisive set was close early as it was tied 7-7 before a kill by Blake Reardon gave the Cardinals the advantage as the teams switched sides. Reardon's point was the first of a 3-0 run that helped the Cardinals gain enough separation to go on and win the match with a 15-12 game win.
Matt Szews led the way for Ball State with 19 kills and two assists while Siebum and Lemuel Turner chipped in 11 and 10, respectively. Turner hit .615 on the night and had a team high six blocks. Quinn Isaacson totaled 43 assists and led the way in digs with 16.
Ball State now travels to Ohio State where it will close out the regular season. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET on Saturday.
