
Cardinals Take 2 Saturday Wins

BSU finishes spring trip Sunday vs. Kansas
BSU defeated St. Joseph's 7-5 before winning a 12-9 slugfest against Mt. St. Mary's in the afternoon.
For the day, Ball State totaled 22 hits (.306 average) and scored 19 runs. Messina went 4-for-9 with three doubles and three RBIs to lift his season batting average to .304. Ryan Peltier played in the second game and went 3-for-4 while scoring two runs and he also added a sac fly. Andre Orselli and Landon McGill earned were the two victorious pitchers of record while Kyle Nicolas and Brendan Burns each notched a save.
BALL STATE 7, ST. JOSEPH'S 5
Ball State never trailed against the Hawks, scoring four times in the 2nd and owning a 7-3 lead before SJU scored two in the bottom of the 9th. BSU's big inning was keyed by a fielding error, followed by singles from Chase Sebby and Griffin Hulecki. Nick Powell also walked and scored and William Baker and Aaron Simpson each delivered the big blows with 2-run hits. Messina and Mack Murphy came through with RBIs as Ball State gave itself a cushion in the 9th.Â
Nicolas got the final 10 outs of the game for his fourth save. He struck out five and walked two. Chayce McDermott was the starter and was effective for 4.0 innings, allowing just two runs.Â
BALL STATE 12, MT. ST. MARY'S 9
After leading in the early innings, Ball State took command of a back-and-forth game with a 6-run top of the 8th. Messina smacked a pair of RBI doubles to lift BSU to a 3-0 lead, but the score was 6-6 when the Cardinals took the lead for good. John Ricotta and Noah Navarro each had a 2-run single, Mack Murphy had a sac fly and the Cardinals kept the pressure on as seven of the first eight batters in the inning reached base. Mt. St. Mary's found some runs late as Ball State used a plethora of pitchers. Peltier and Messina each had three hits while Navarro and Ricotta each had two. Simpson walked twice and scored two runs.
On the mound, Mike Pachmayer got 10 outs before giving way to Ty Weatherly, who struck out six and allowed just two hits over 2.1 innings. McGill worked 2.0 innings late and was credited with the win while Burns got the last two outs of the day.
Ball State, now better than .500 for the first time this year at 8-7, is 6-2 on its spring break trip with one game to play. BSU finishes the Florida swing with Kansas Sunday, March 10 at 9:30 a.m.
