Kansas beats Ball State in last game of trip, home opener Tuesday afternoon
PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. - The Ball State baseball team is coming home after winning six of its nine games during spring break. The trip ended Sunday with a 6-1 loss to Kansas.
While Ball State (8-8) had made its mark all week by scoring early in games, it was Kansas that struck first on Sunday morning. KU got two runs in the 1st for an early lead before a home run by Noah Navarro cut the lead in half. It was Navarro's second longball of the year.
Kansas (11-3) tacked on a single run in four later innings to keep control of the game. Five of the six runs scored by Kansas were unearned.
"We were a bit tired today and Kansas did a really nice job. Their pitcher had a good breaking ball and they have a very physical team," head coach Rich Maloney said. "THe good news is we won six and lost three. We'd like to have that UCF game back, but considering the schedule we've played 6-3 is a good week. We're growing and learning as at team and we're starting to hit more."
In addition to Navarro's homer, Aaron Simpson had two hits on Sunday. Simpson hit .324 with eight RBIs on the spring trip. Ross Messina was the big bat for the week, hitting .417 with nine RBIs and nine extra-base hits.
John Baker, making his second start of the week, worked 4.0 innings and allowed just two hits. All three runs charged to him were unearned.
The loss to Kansas was the only loss for Ball State on a neutral field during the trip. The only other setbacks came in true road games at UCF and Charleston Southern. The trip included two wins over Notre Dame and wins over Big East and Atlantic-10 opponents.
Baseball season officially strikes Muncie this coming Tuesday afternoon when the Cardinals take the field at home for the first time. BSU hosts Purdue Fort Wayne Tuesday at 3 p.m. at Ball Diamond at First Merchants Complex.Â
"We're excited to come home and have an opportunity to play at home for our fans and the community," Maloney said.
