Men's Tennis Ends Weekend Play With 6-1 Win Over EIU
March 10, 2019 | Men's Tennis
MUNCIE, Ind. - Today marked the fifth-straight match for the Cardinals this weekend. Ball State played back-to-back doubleheaders Friday and Saturday, winning both 7-0 and then wrapped up action with a 6-1 victory over Eastern Illinois Sunday afternoon at the Muncie YMCA Tennis Center.
With the win, the Cardinals improved to 8-7 in dual action this spring while the Panthers fall to 9-10 on the season.
First off the court in doubles was the No. 1 twin dynamic duo of Marko and Nemanja Guzina. The twosome did not give up a game to Gage Kingsmith and Gertjan De Wilder, winning 6-0. Shortly after, Tom Carney alongside partner Thibault De Negri would clinch the point after their 6-3 take down over Daniel Hernandez and Mike Jansen on court two.
The match continued to go smoothly for the Cardinals in singles action, as Ball State took first sets on all six courts. Khamasi Muhiga gave Ball State a 2-0 lead after taking down De Wilder, 6-1, 6-2 at position six. De Negri beat Kingsmith on court three, 6-4, 7-5 to make the score 3-0. After that, Nemanja Guzina claimed the match for the Cardinals taking the first set from Jansen, 6-4 and then 6-3 in the second at No. 3 spot.
With the win already locked up for Ball State, three courts remained, Bryce Bonin and Chris Adams registered straight set victories over their respective opponents leaving just the top court to be decided. Marko Guzina won the first set over Freddie O'Brien, 7-5, but then dropped the second by the same score. The tiebreaker was close as both players fought hard to come out on top but unfortunately, O'Brien took the match 11-9.
The Ball State men's tennis team opens Mid-American Conference action over rival Western Michigan Friday at Cardinal Creek Tennis Center, weather permitting. If inclement weather does occur Ball State will be back indoors at the Muncie Northwest YMCA. First serve is set for 1 p.m.
