Men’s Tennis Opens MAC Play At Home This Weekend
March 13, 2019 | Men's Tennis
MUNCIE, Ind. - The Ball State men's tennis team opens Mid-American Conference action this weekend at home against Western Michigan (Friday) and Northern Illinois (Sunday) at 1 p.m. The matches will be played at the Cardinal Creek Tennis Center if weather permits. If inclement weather does occur, the matches will be moved indoors to the Northwest YMCA Tennis Center.
Friday's matchup is a bit of a rivalry, as both the Cardinals and the Broncos have dominated the MAC at various times over the years. Both teams enter Friday's contest with an overall spring record of 8-7. WMU won the MAC regular season title last year and is set to host the 2019 conference tournament in Kalamazoo, April 19-21.
After Friday, the Cardinals will close out their weekend of league play against Northern Illinois. The Huskies come to Ball State with an 8-7 overall ledger as well.
Head Coach Bill Richards, who is in his 47th season as a Cardinal, is a 1970 graduate of Western Michigan. Richards was a three-year letterwinner for the Broncos and a MAC Champion in both singles and doubles.
Ball State last won the MAC Tournament in 2014 when the Cardinals claimed the title after defeating Buffalo, 4-3, at the Cardinal Creek Tennis Center. Richards has led the program to 38 Mid-American Conference regular season and/or tournament championships along with eight NCAA appearances. He owns an overall career record of 693-422 (.621) and a MAC record of 215-59 (784).
