Men’s Tennis Drops MAC Opener To WMU Friday
March 15, 2019 | Men's Tennis
MUNCIE, Ind. – The Ball State men's tennis team fell 5-2 to rival Western Michigan Friday afternoon in its Mid-American Conference opener at the Northwest Muncie YMCA Tennis Center. The Cardinals are now 8-8 on the season and 0-1 in league action while the Broncos improved to 9-7 in dual action and 1-0 in MAC play.
The doubles point went to the Broncos despite the Cardinals efforts. First off the court for Ball State, were this week's Ball State MAC Doubles Team of the Week, Thibault de Negri and Tom Carney. The duo fell to WMU's Jannik Opitz and Kennosuke Nouchi by a score of 6-3 on court two. The Broncos would then take position three from the Cardinals for the doubles win. Marko and Nemanja Guzina's match went unfinished but were tied 6-6 against WMU's Jack Randall and Peter Kuszynski on the top court before play was suspended.
The Broncos took four of the six singles courts from the Cardinals for the victory. Despite the loss, Ball State had two players earn victories this afternoon. De Negri won on court three in straight sets after defeating WMU's Lenhard Haupt, 6-2, 6-2. At position four, Chris Adams was victorious over Randall, 7-5, 3-6, 10-6. Marko Guzina also put up a good fight over Matej Svjetlicic at position two but lost in the tiebreaker.
The Ball State men's tennis team continues Mid-American Conference action when it hosts Northern Illinois Sunday at the Cardinal Creek Tennis Center, weather permitting. If inclement weather occurs the Cardinals will move indoors at the Northwest YMCA. First serve is at 1 p.m.
