Cardinals Finish Third at Miami Invitational
December 07, 2019 | Men's Swimming and Diving, Women's Swimming and Diving
OXFORD, Ohio – In a shortened version of the annual Miami Invitational, both the Ball State men's and women's swimming and diving teams set several lifetime bests and broke into the schools' top-10 records list while finishing in third place overall.
The women scored a total of 913 points while the men registered 1,041.5. Both efforts were good for third place, and combined, resulted in third place as well. Penn won in the men's, women's and overall competitions while host Miami earned second across the board. Full team results can be viewed below.
"Our Cardinals came ready to compete this weekend," said head coach J. Agnew. "It was great to see Ben Andrew break his own school record in the 100 Fly. He has been tenacious in his preparation. It was also great to pick up some wins on both the men's and women's side in a heated battle with MAC schools and Penn. While our men and women both ended up third, we have half the season yet to go and we are moving in the right direction."
Due to pool conditions, Friday night's events were canceled, and Saturday's schedule was adjusted. Diving was also canceled on Saturday and the swimming events included the 200 Medley Relay, 1650 Free (W), 200 Back, 1650 Free (M), 100 Free, 200 Breast, 200 Fly and 400 Free Relay.
Logan Ackley had one of the biggest swims on the night when he tied for first in the men's 200 Back and was 0.6 second off his school record. Shelby Crist earned a lifetime best in the same event for the Cardinals. Katie Walker beat her lifetime best in the 1650 Free by 11 seconds while Apsara Sakbun finished second in the 100 Free after earlier winning the 50 Free. Alex Bader jumped into the top three in school history in the 200 Breast with a second-place finish.
The Cardinals also earned a big win in the women's 200 Medley Relay. The team of Audrey Schank, Bader, Crist and Sakbun took home the victory at the end of the competition.
Ball State now takes a break until the women host Toledo on Jan. 16. That meet will open at 6 p.m. ET.
