Soccer’s Season Ends in Heartbreaking MAC Quarterfinal
November 03, 2019 | Soccer
MUNCIE, Ind. – Despite winning 13 one-score games in 2019, the cardiac Cardinals did not have one more in them as they fell to Eastern Michigan, 2-1, in heartbreaking fashion in Sunday's Mid-American Conference Tournament quarterfinal at Briner Sports Complex.
The loss marked the end of the 2019 campaign for Ball State. The Cardinals finish the season with an overall record of 15-5-0 and 9-2-0 mark in conference play.
"Credit Eastern Michigan for making just one more play than we did today," said head coach Josh Rife. "This loss stings, but when you look at the season as a whole, we accomplished a lot. This team can hold its head high with everything it did this year. I'm so proud of all of them, especially our seniors for all they accomplished at Ball State."
In true Ball State soccer fashion, the game was tied at 1-1 with less than two minutes to play. Unfortunately, the Cardinals were on the wrong side of the coin this time as they were whistled for a hand ball inside the 18 which awarded the Eagles a penalty kick. EMU's Amanda Cripps stepped up to the spot and buried the game-winning goal to put Eastern Michigan through to the semifinals.
Ball State played from behind for most of the match as the Eagles scored the contest's first goal in the 14th minute off a free kick. The Cardinals equalized in the 60th minute when Peighton Cook beat the keeper to the bottom left corner off assists from Kerrigan Johnson and Sammi Corcoran. It was the only goal BSU could manufacture though as it couldn't quite capitalize on any of its other good looks.
BSU finished the afternoon with eight total shots and four on goal. The Cardinals also earned eight corner kicks to EMU's three. Tristin Stuteville, the program's all-time winningest goalkeeper, made six saves in her final appearance in a Ball State uniform.
Despite a tough end to the season, Ball State accomplished a great deal in Rife's first season at the helm. Fifteen wins are the most since 2005 and ties the '05 squad for the most wins in a season in program history. The Cardinals also recorded the largest win since 2005 and Grace Alsop recorded the first hat trick since 2011. BSU's seniors finish their Ball State careers with a total of 54 wins.
