TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – With a win over Southern Illinois already secured, the women of Ball State swimming and diving entered the final event of the day looking to earn a second a victory against Indiana State. Peighton Gilbert, Makenna Bottorff, Anne Vormohr and Alexa McDonald got the job done with a time of 3:32.65 in the 400 free relay as the ladies walked away with a 2-0 record on Saturday afternoon.
The women knocked off Southern Illinois by a margin of 191.50-108.50 and defeated Indiana State by a narrow score of 150-148. The men also went up against Southern Illinois, but fell 211-89.
The women set the tone early as Audrey Schank, Mason Dahman, Bottorff and Gilbert secured the first victory of the day in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:45.52. The men won the same event with a team made up of Ben Andrew, Jacob Powell, Alec Tuthill and Drew Weeks. They clocked a time of 1:37.45
The next Ball State win of the day came in the 100 breast when Alex Bader's 1:06.78 got the job done. This was right after Logan Ackley took second in the 100 back with a time of 54.33. Bader also secured a victory in the 200 breast by finishing with a 2:26.13.
In the diving portion of the meet, multiple Cardinals completed career-best dives. Rachel Bertram registered a career best on the 3m with a 298.95 which placed her in second. She also scored a 280.70 on the 1m which also secured a second-place finish. Both Sean Wolfe and Hunter Ongay put together their career bests on the 3m where they placed fourth and third, respectively. Wolfe scored a 271.20 while Ongay put together a 289.45. The pair switched places on the 1m.
"We had some pretty solid diving today which was great to see given where we are in our training cycle," said diving coach Nick Gayes. "Rachel Bertram had a career best score on 3m. Sean and Hunter were fantastic on 3m posting the best scores for our program since 2013-14. That gives us a lot of momentum and confidence in our final preparations for MAC."
Andrew made sure that his only win of the day wasn't in the relays. He put together a 21.78 in the 50 free to secure a victory and was followed by McDonald winning the women's 100 free with a time of 52.86.
The Cardinals face a quick turnaround as the men, joined by the women divers, will face Butler tomorrow at noon (Jan. 27).
