Turner Named Player of the Week, Cardinals Move up in Rankings
January 22, 2019 | Men's Volleyball
MUNCIE, Ind. – Lemuel Turner of the Ball State University men's volleyball team has been named the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (MIVA) Defensive Player of the Week after solid outings against ranked opponents UC Santa Barbara and Cal State Northridge last week.
The junior middle attacker was dominant at the net all week with 16 total blocks in the two matches, including 11 in a thrilling, five-game upset victory over No. 10 Cal State Northridge. Turner also compiled seven kills and two digs on the week. The Vernon Hills, Ill. native owns all the solo blocks for the Cardinals to date this season.
"I was so busy gushing about Blake Reardon's performance last week that I failed to mention just how great Lem played on Saturday," said head coach Joel Walton. "We've had some really good middles come through here that compiled a lot of blocks, but 11 in a game is really impressive. I don't know the last time somebody did that for us. I'm very happy for Lem."
Turner has impressed since being inserted into the starting lineup against Brigham Young earlier in the season. He leads the team with 22 blocks on the year.
AVCA TOP-15 Poll
After holding a position of 14 in the AVCA Top-15 Poll the past two weeks, Ball State moved up one spot on Monday and is now the No. 13 ranked team in the country. The Cardinals initially started the season unranked but have moved up ever since. Waiting for Ball State this week is the conference opener against No. 12 Ohio State.
