
Rodriguez Twins Lead Cross Country at Greater Louisville Classic

LOUISVILLE, Ky.-- Thanks to a career-best 5K time of 18:12.5, junior Maritza Rodriguez placed 52nd among 178 scored runners to lead the Ball State cross country team to the finish line of the Greater Louisville Classic Saturday morning at E.P. "Tom" Sawyer State Park in Louisville, Kentucky.
Not far behind, her twin sister junior Meliza Rodriguez who also turned in a career-best 5K effort of 18:52.4 to place 98th among scored runners. It marks the first time the twins have combined to be the Cardinals' top two runners in the same race over their careers.
Sophomore Emmalyne Tarsa was Ball State's third-fastest runner on the day, clocking in with a career-best 5K mark of 19:04.7. Rounding out Ball State's five scored runners were sophomore Cayla Eckenroth in 127th (19:07.7) and junior Hannah Cummings in 129th (19:09.3).
Overall, the Cardinals five scored runners combined for 528 points to place 21st among the 26 scored teams in Saturday's Gold Race of the Greater Louisville Classic which featured a total of 226 competitors. Michigan won the race with 46 points.
Also competing for the Cardinals Saturday were junior Lauren Whitehouse (135th, 19:13.6), freshman Karleigh Conner (142nd / 19:18.0) and junior Peyton Kneadler (DNS / 19:30.7). Conner's time of 19:18.0 was a career-fast time, giving Ball State a total of four career marks on the day.
Next up for the Ball State cross country program, the 2018 JennaStrong Fall Classic hosted by Wilmington College on Friday, Oct. 12. The women's 5K race is slated to being at 4:30 p.m.
