IOWA CITY, Iowa - The Ball State field hockey team (0-4) closed out its weekend of competition with a 7-1 loss at Big Ten foe Iowa (4-1) Sunday afternoon.
Â
The Hawkeyes got off to a strong offensive start after Sophie Sunderland scored Iowa's first goal in the first two minutes of action. Â Sunderland would strike again at the 10:40 mark in the first half along with goals from teammates Makenna Grewe and Ryley Miller. Â Iowa's strong offense continued at the net in the second half as the Hawkeyes would strike three more times before the end of regulation.
Â
Ball State didn't end the contest empty handed though, as redshirt sophomore Sierra Jefferson scored her first goal of the season and fourth of her career. Redshirt junior Michelle Shampton was awarded the assist on Jefferson's goal.  Shampton led the squad with three shot attempts on the day. Â
Â
Defensively, sophomore goal keeper Grace Chavez registered 13 saves and now has 103 saves for her career at Ball State.  Iowa's goal keeper Leslie Speight only had five saves for the contest. Both Chavez and Speight played the entire 70 minutes.
