MUNCIE, Ind. - The Ball State field hockey team will travel to the campus of Big Ten foe Ohio State to take on the Buckeyes Friday at 4 p.m. and then will wrap up the weekend Saturday against Lehigh beginning at noon, also at Ohio State.
The game against Ohio State will mark the third Big Ten member the Cardinals have faced in the last two weeks of play.  Ball State has also competed against Indiana (Aug. 26) and Iowa (Sept. 2).  The Cardinals (0-4) are looking for their first win of the season under first-year head coach Stephanie Bernthal.  Last weekend, sophomore Abby Ferenczy and redshirt sophomore Sierra Jefferson each registered one goal apiece for the Cardinals' first two scores of the season.  Defensively, sophomore goalkeeper Grace Chavez recorded her 100th career save on Sunday against the Hawkeyes.
Ball State hasn't played Ohio State since the 2016 season, a 3-0 loss at the Briner Sports Complex.  The Buckeyes have won the last eight meetings against the Cardinals.  Ball State last defeated Ohio State on Sept. 18, 2007 by a score of 2-1 in Muncie.
The second game for the Cardinals this weekend will come against Lehigh on Saturday.  Ball State defeated the Mountain Hawks last season in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, in a 2-1 overtime victory.  Michelle Shampton tallied three shots and three shots on goal that game, while Darbi Gullett marked two at the net. In the cage, Chavez recorded six saves.
After this weekend, Ball State will return to the Briner Sports Complex Sept. 15 when it hosts Miami University in its Mid-American Conference opener at noon. Â
