Dombrowski’s Overtime Header Lifts Ball State to Road Win
August 26, 2018 | Soccer
MOREHEAD, KY. – The Ball State University soccer team created several chances but could not score until Jenna Dombrowski's header hit the back of the net in overtime to earn the Cardinals a 1-0 victory over Morehead State on Sunday afternoon at Jayne Stadium.
The Cardinals improved to 2-1-0 with the win while Morehead State dropped to 1-3-0.
"I'm really proud of our team. I thought the girls improved on the things we addressed from the previous game and put together a complete effort," said Ball State head coach Craig Roberts. "Morehead State is a well-organized team and their goalkeeper played an incredible match. It was a stalemate until we finally scored. The girls really grew today."
BSU dominated possession for most of the match as it held a sizable advantage in shots with 22 to Morehead State's 11. Thirteen of those were on goal. Ball State also won four corner kicks as opposed to three for the Eagles.
Ball State was on the attack early and often as 15 of its 22 shots came in the opening half. Multiple times, the Cardinals were close to breaking through, but Morehead State's goalkeeper, Eva Helgadottir, turned in a stellar performance and made several big saves. BSU keeper Tristin Stuteville anchored the defense for the Cardinals and made multiple key saves of her own to keep the Eagles off the scoreboard.
Ball State later battled through a few minutes of overtime until it was awarded a free kick. Paula Guerrero stepped up to take the kick and Dombrowski headed it in to finally beat the keeper and score the golden goal.
"It was a really hot day on a difficult surface, and we battled through and got a good result," Roberts said. "This match will come in handy come MAC play when we need to be at our best."
Tatiana Mason, Kennedy Metzger, Sam Kambol and Alessandra Fistrovich each got off three shots apiece while Allison Abbe, Dombrowski and Julia Elvbo all had two. Dombrowski had the lone goal of the match and Guerrero was awarded with an assist. Stuteville claimed her first clean sheet of the year.
The Cardinals will now prepare for a trip to South Carolina where they will face the College of Charleston and Charleston Southern.
