MUNCIE, Ind. – Another athletic year is in the books for the Cardinals. Ball State student-athletes, coaches and teams accomplished several notable feats in 2017-18.
Through much discussion, BallStateSports.com has identified the top 10 storylines of the year. We are revealing the storylines one-by-one each week over a period of 10 weeks.
The stories are being revealed in chronological order, beginning with the fall season and running through the spring. We continue this week with the announcement of Beth Goetz as the new Director of Athletics in May.
Ball State Hires Beth Goetz to Lead Athletics Program
Beth Goetz was selected as the Cardinals' new Director of Intercollegiate Athletics by Ball State President Geoffrey Mearns on May 21 and stepped into her current role in mid-June. She replaced Mark Sandy, who announced his retirement in late January.
Goetz has an extensive background in collegiate athletics that began as a soccer player at Brevard College and Clemson University. She launched her professional career as the assistant women's soccer coach at Missouri-St. Louis in 1996 before taking over the head coaching duties in 1997. After serving as the head coach at UMSL for 11 years, Goetz transitioned into a full-time administrative role at Butler in 2008.
Over the last 10 years, Goetz has served in key leadership positions at Butler, Minnesota and Connecticut. She stepped in as interim Athletics Director at Minnesota in 2015-16 and spent the previous two years as the chief operating officer for athletics at UConn.
"Growing up here in the Midwest and having spent those five years in the state of Indiana was a draw right off the bat," Goetz said of her new position at Ball State. "As I started to do more research on where the institution is and where the institution is going, is when I got intrigued."
"We've got some great athletic moments in our history, but I also think we are poised for some great success going forward. Being a part of that is really exciting."
Goetz is the first female Athletics Director at Ball State since Andrea Seger in 2002.
